Not My Boy!: A Father, A Son, and One Family’s Journey with
Price: $16.49
In Not My Boy!, Rodney Peete offers not only a heartrending, candid look inside his personal journey with his son’s autism but a first-of-its-kind, inspirational road map that will help families facing similar challenges to move forward. Effectively woven throughout Peete’s moving account of his life with his son R.J. are the powerful voices, insights, and dreams of other fathers, high-profile figures as well as unsung heroes, who’ve traveled this difficult path.
Autism affects four times as many boys as it does girls. For their fathers, expectations and hopes are drastically changed–as NFL star Rodney Peete’s were when his son R.J. was diagnosed at the age of three. After a period of anger and denial, an all-too-common reaction among fathers, Rodney joined his wife, Holly, in her efforts to help their son. With determination, love, and understanding, the family worked with R.J. to help him once again engage with the world.
Eight challenging years later, R.J. has gone from the son one doctor warned would never say “I love you” to a thriving, vibrant boy who scored his first soccer goal while his dad cheered from the sidelines.
Praise for Not My Boy!
“I wish I had something fancy to say, but this story is simply beyond words–just read it! I vote to make Rodney’s book, Not My Boy!, required reading for every first-time, second-time, or any-other-time father.”
–Will Smith / actor, producer
“Rodney Peete writes a compelling book that will help fathers emotionally deal with the challenge of raising a child with autism. The mental toughness of a man all but disappears when faced with this reality, but Rodney’s candid message will encourage anyone who is chosen to be on this journey.”
–Alonzo Mourning, former NBA player
“Not My Boy is a must-read for parents–especially dads–who have a child on the autism spectrum. It’s inspiring, enlightening, and most importantly, truthful. Rodney gives the reader the real story on how autism can cause total dysfunction in the family, and in even the strongest of marriages, if husband and wife don’t work as a team. He opens up his heart, and speaks candidly about his mistakes, all the while learning how to best help R.J. in his battle to overcome the challenges of autism. Their fight is by no means over, but the experiences that he shares will help every family, and every couple, to be better advocates, teachers, and parents.”
–Artie Kempner, lead director for NASCAR/NFL on Fox
“A book every father needs to read! Not My Boy is about unconditional love. I read it in one weekend. . . . It was and is amazing.”
–Cyd Wilson, InStyle magazine

We often think of the glamorous side of professional sports - the multi-million dollar contracts, the adulation of the fans, the steady stream of endorsements, and all the other perks that come along to those talented enough to be a regular topic of discussion on ESPN - until we're reminded that all the fame and money in the world are useless when a family has to deal with the harsh reality of autism.
Such is the story of former NFL star, Rodney Peete, who grew up in the relative comfort of the southeastern Arizona desert, with a supportive family - featuring a dad who became a terrific role model for young Rodney as he developed his obvious athletic prowess, from high school track star to gifted NFL quarterback.
However, when everything seemed to be going Peete's way, he and his wife were faced with the devastating diagnosis no parent would ever want to hear - that their young son was afflicted with autism. After a brief period of denial, which must be normal for anyone dealing with this issue, the Peetes faced the challenge head-on, with a positive attitude, understanding, compassion; and above all else, love for their child.
This is a story filled with an inspirational message for any parents facing similar challenges; and it's not necessarily just for those trying to cope with autism. It's about making the best of any difficult situation; about bonding together as a family to deal with a crisis; and in the end, reaching a point of acceptance and positive resolution.
This is indeed a wonderful book which delivers a truly inspirational message of hope. Read it; you'll be moved as I was. -- An Inspirational Message of Hope
I found this book to be extraordinarily comforting. A lot of the issues we are facing with our child--inclusion, "the other spectrum"--are discussed freely and openly here. Even the touchy vaccine debate is discussed without emotional upheaval, and Mr. Peete has some food for thought.
I got lucky--my child is awesome (she really is), and my husband is an equal partner in this journey; a lot of mothers are not so lucky. My hope is that some of those fathers that have dropped out or shut down might read this book, and find some comfort, too. -- Gotta Read It
I was worried that Mr. Peete's book was going to be another woe-is-me autism parent kind of book like Jenny McCarthy's first book, however I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this book more and more as it went on, likely because I could relate more to Rodney as a father of a boy with Autism, then as a pro-football player who's just figuring out his son may not be typical. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a guy's viewpoint on life and challenges when you must instead change your own behaviors to positively impact someone in your life with Autism... rather than doing the 'guy thing' and trying to find a way to 'fix' your child. -- Better than I thought it was going to be
It is my feeling that if you are the parent of an autistic child, especially if you are just recieving the diagnosis, this is a book that will let you know that you are not alone in your denial, disappointment and just about any other emotion that you are having. I also think that family members, teachers, anyone who is in contact with an autistic child would benefit greatly from this book. I originally picked it up for my husband, but ended up reading it first. It gave me great comfort and the feeling that we are not alone in our struggles with our son. Thank you, Rodney Peete, for sharing your story. Not My Boy!: A Father, A Son, and One Family's Journey with Autism -- A Must Read .
